where everything else goes

if i get a life someday, it will be this one

My email to the assistant superintendent of our school district

Dear Dr. Soeder,

I am writing to express my great displeasure with the OJRSD administration after learning that no students were permitted to view the President's speech today, the day it was broadcast.

Why was no opportunity given for students who wished to view the speech to see it? Why were parents not consulted regarding this decision of the board, which as is already well known, is completely out of touch with the vast majority of parents and students in this district?

I completely understand and respect that some parents and political activists across the nation were intensely opposed to the airing of this speech and had insisted that their children be allowed the option of not viewing the speech. That is fine with me, but instead of allowing that option for some, this district  prohibited all students from viewing the speech; a speech written for them and delivered to them by the President of the United States. Your web site carries a message stating that perhaps it will be shown to them at another time. Please, let us dispense with disingenuousness.

I apologize if I seem a bit strident about this but I am quite distressed at this development and would appreciate it if in the future, I as a parent would be allowed to have more of a say in what my own kids are permitted to, or are kept from, seeing at school. I realize that I am entrusting my daughters' education to you and that in doing so I must respect your judgment as professional educators. But you must also realize that this is getting harder and harder to do.

If you would be so kind, please pass my concern on to whomever happens to be acting superintendent this week. I've lost track.

Thank you,

Jim Jannotti

the disgby debacle was a tempest in a teapot

Digsby had some problems recently. Some big problems.

Remember this post:
http://download.cnet.com/8301-2007_4-10309755-12.html ... from CNet's Seth Rosenblatt

or this one:
http://lifehacker.com/5336382/digsby-joins-the-dark-side-uses-your-pc-to-make-money by The How To Geek.

They sprung the story of Digsby's nefarious crapware practices and computer-resource borrowing (or more aptly, stealing).

Go open source! Said lifehacker:

"The only way you are definitely going to avoid greedy software developers exploiting you is to stick with open source, make sure to donate to your favorite open source projects, and stop installing software with bundled crapware."

So uninstall Digsby, they said.

And as Rosenblatt noted that it's entirely possible to keep Digsby from using your computer's resources for its research purposes:

"Users who want to keep Digsby but don't want the Plura system to run can disable it by going to the menu bar Help option, clicking on Support Digsby, and choosing Disable for Help Digsby Conduct Research."

Nonetheless, he concludes:

"Given that Digsby's competitors are able to offer similar and, in some cases, identical features, and that they're able to do it without burying a bad-faith feature in the EULA or behind a semi-functional pop-up, I'm going to stand by my assessment from yesterday: For now, don't use Digsby."

So, because I knew I could just go out there on the wide open web and instantly download some beautiful open source software that could do everything that Digsby does and maybe even do it, if not better, at least more 'ethically', I did what they said.

Right away.

I uninstalled Digsby which had worked absolutely beautifully and waded into the tubez to cobble together a set of open source-ware that would give me the ability to do email, IM, facebook and twitter in some unified way and with minimal browser openings.

And I found that it is impossible.

Maybe I'm wrong. But I tried everything I could get my hands on over the course of a week or so: feedalizr, which came close; tweetdeck which was nice but big, pidgin which does im. I gave twhirl another whirl. I tried a couple of other things as well. Meebo came the closest to what I was looking for. What I ultimately would up with was google desktop with gmail  in the sidebar, meebo notifier with meebo chat app open in a google chrome application shortcut and tweetdeck running with facebook added in.

It was at about this time that I noticed that my cpu usage was running steadily between 95-100 percent and also about this time that I realized that I was crazy.

So I am eating crow. I have now re-installed Digsby. I read their post about the kerfuffle, this one here:  http://blog.digsby.com/archives/693 and I voted at the bottom of the post for my preferred revenue generation option.

I've used the opt out feature to keep digsby from borrowing my CPU and right now at this moment, with digsby running keeping track of my gmail and two webmail accounts, facebook and twitter streams, 5 chrome windows open, each with mulptiple tabs and this post in its own gmail window, plug Google desktop, panda antivirus, wefi and whatever else... my CPU usage is under 45%.

So hey, don't panic. Reinstall that program, but be smarter than you where two weeks ago.

Let me put my own spin on Mr Rosenblatt's verdict: Given that Digsby's competitors have not even come close to finding a way to match Digsby's capabilities without eating your processor alive, and given that Digbsy does give you a way to avoid having your computer be made a part of their botnet, keep on using Digsby.

postality: the adventure continues (ad nauseum)

It was Saturday, the day the Postal Service would like to cut form its delivery schedule, effectively eliminating my job. But this post is not about that.

I had finished my route and was casing my afternoon flats and I was nearly finished. Another sub returned and after a couple of minutes, slowly approached my mail case. "I just wanted to let you know about this," she said. "I'm giving my two week notice." She was offered a full time position at what had been a second part time job.

This sub was on Route 5. The reason she came to me is that I'm the one who usually gets the call for R5 when this person can't do it. This could mean that, even if the Postal Service does cut Saturday (I think it's unlikely and makes no sense whatsoever but that's never stopped USPS before), I will still get more than enough work from Uncle Sam.

there's something happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear!

When we last saw our protagonist, he was wondering why on earth his favorite hangout and caffeine-pusher was suddenly and inexplicably closed.

Turned out it wasn't closed. Turns out there was a managment shake-up, the third one in as many months.

Now there's a new manager, again. They fired the old one. Again. They've also completely changed their menu. Where once there were excellent and out of the ordinary selections like the French Hoagie featuring greens, peppers and brie cheese, not to mention out of this world sticky buns, there is now nothing more exoctic than an Italian Hoagie. You can get a Beef Hot Dog if you want one, though. I'll pass.

They also changed their hours. Now this coffee shop is not open until 11am on Wednesdays and Thursdays, though they open bright and early on Friday: 10am.

And the new manager, who's also running the kitchen and doing most of the food prep? And who keeps on coming over to ask what kind of work I'm doing and steal a look at my computer screen? Yeah.

This star is losing its luster, fast!

waiting for the coffee to brew randomness

- I've been working all morning and into the afternoon. I've accomplished nothing.

- The oldest daughter and I are making a return trip to Gettysburg tomorrow. This is why I'm at home today and not in Bay Village, OH where...

-Many of my friends will be gathering to remember and celebrate the life of our dear friend, Bea Litty tonight. Just a terrific woman! Much loved.

-Walgreen's has the best collection of interesting bar soaps. Target is a close second. Any other store is a complete waste of time. Bath and Body works doesn't even carry bar soaps. wtf?

-I need to order more coffee. I'm probably going to get it from One Village but if any of you reading this have recommendations for a change-up, I'm all <virtual> ears.

by now you've found the soy sauce

One of the funniest things that ever happened to me during my youth ministry career was an accident, one that was caused by someone who wasn't even there.

We were in Rapid City, South Dakota on our way to the Pine Ridge Reservation. Some good folks had allowed us leaders to stay overnight at their house while they were out of town. It was the Fourth of July and we took a short walk to see the fireworks, which were less than stellar. When we returned to the house it was time to arrange ourselves for the night.

Dave, one of our leaders, opened up his suitcase and started rooting around for stuff. His wife, Bea, had left him a couple of love notes in the suitcase.

Suddenly Dave said, "What the..." we turned to see him pulling a shirt out of the case. "Awww, what did she do?" Dave held the shirt up for all to see. A circular brown stain covered more than half of the shirt, it had seeped through and was visible on both the front and the back.

He then pulled from the case a half empty bottle of soy sauce, along another note from Bea. It began, "By now you've found the soy sauce."

Apparently there had been stir fry for dinner a few nights earlier but they had run out of soy sauce. Dave had complained. Something told me that he would never again complain about having no soy sauce.

Dave's wife, Bea wasn't with us on that trip, not physically but she was a great encouragement to us all. It was Bea's untiring effort that brought about that work trip in the first place. For several years she was my office assistant and that spring she had made dozens of phone calls trying to set up the trip. After a solid month of frustration she was about to give up. She turned to me and said, "this is the last phone call." It was.

Bea blessed my life even before I took the job at that church. She somehow got hold of my application for the youth minister position. One odd question asked "What is your motto in life and how would it look printed on a T-shirt." Bea had my design hand painted on a t-shirt. It was presented to me at my first youth group meeting on March 14, 1993. I still have it.

It was Bea and Dave that opened their home to me when I arrived in town and allowed me to stay with them for more than a week while I found a place to live.

In these and many other ways Bea was a blessing to me personally, but I was just one among many who were similarly blessed to call her friend. The pews at Bea's church will no doubt be filled on Tuesday evening with those folks. They will remember and celebrate.

Bea will not be there, not physically, for after many years of struggling against cancer, Belinda Litty passed away on Wednesday.

beach bananas

They have this place here called The Bashful Banana. They serve all kinds of breakfast stuff, lunch stuff and smoothies as well, but their stock in trade is banana whip.

Banana whip is an ice cream like substance. It's cold, creamy, yummy and nothing but bananas. No added sugar or anything like that.

On my lengthy morning walk I stopped at BB and had some whip with blueberries, almonds and coconuts on top. It was very good. Of course, if you don't like bananas you won't like the whip, but there's plenty of other stuff too.

You can read all about it at their website: http://www.bashfulbananacafe.com/index2.html

you came in with the breeze on sunday morning

Ocean City was founded by Methodists so it is by definition a pretty awesome place. It's a dry town but you're allowed to bring your own.

Clouds rolled in from the mainland at about 4:30 yesterday afternoon and we've been stuck under them ever since. The forecast for today insists that they're leaving, but for the rest of the week it isn't so good, unless you like clouds and intermittent rain. Maybe it will change.

A church carillon is ringing somewhere, calling people to church with Sibelius' Finlandia, which when joined with words written a century earlier by Katarina von Schlegel, gives us they hymn "Be Still My Soul."

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
