more postal blues

Today was not such a good one for me at the post office. In fact, this whole week kinda sucked. As usual I was hit with above average mail volume... it's freaky how the mail comes heavy every time I show up; even the other carriers have started to notice this. And at the end of the day I pissed off an associate supervisor.

My primary route is being counted right now. During the count we're supposed to get timed while we sort the outgoing mail we bring back from the route. The associate supervisor said he was just going to give me credit for one minute and that I only had letters (this was not true, I had more than just letters). I'll spare you a long explanation of why he said this but he finished by saying, "That's right from the boss," i.e. our postmaster.

Well I didn't really like his explanation or the new rules instituted by our postmaster, so I called them what they were. I think you can probably figure out the word I used without me typing it here.

With that, I stomped off to the dock to sort my outgoing mail, which was clearly not just letters, but whatever.

When I came back the supervisor said, "I gonna make sure the postmaster knows what you think of his rules so that you and he can have a little talk about it."

"Okay," I said. I would welcome such a discussion though it won't ever take place. I'm a sub and it doesn't matter what I think. The person who really needs to have a fair count is the regular carrier. And I will make damn sure HE hears about this.

There are days when I want to quit this job despite the fact that I really need the money it provides to me and my family. This was one of those days.

not forgotten

I certainly have not forgotten the first one, but it is Patriot's Day 2006 that I'm remembering at the moment. On the 9th of that year I set out from PA on a two week road trip that eventually took me to Texas, The Grand Canyon, New Mexico and the Rockies. On the 11th, I was crossing Missouri on the way to meet a friend in Kansas City. On overpasses above interstate 70W, and later on overpasses on I-35 heading south through Kansas toward Oklahoma City, people stood with flags flying and God Bless America signs, waving at passers by. Flags flew at half mast at rest stops and coffee shops, everywhere. People waving with their flags didn't care if you were Democrat or Republican or Independent (like me) or what color or nationality you were. To them you were just a fellow traveler on Patriot's Day.

It was good to be reminded, not as much of our tragedy though we do need to remember that, but of our unity. We're good at forgetting our unity. But not today.
